Ignaz Semmelweis is considered the pioneer of handwashing to prevent the spread of bacteria from person to person. Many women chose to give birth in a midwife ward rather than student-staffed clinics, where Puerperal Fever was 3x deadlier. Is this why at-home delivery was much more common back then?

I just learnt that a relative from my father's side went to USSR in the early 1900's, fought in WWII, and died in the 1960's and was buried somewhere in Russia. Is there any archive I can access online to find more about him?
